What is in-center hemodialysis?
In-center hemodialysis is the most common form of kidney replacement therapy. During treatment, your blood is circulated through an external dialysis machine that acts as an artificial kidney — filtering waste products, excess fluids, and toxins before returning the cleaned blood to your body.
At Avitus, every session takes place under the direct supervision of our nephrologists and experienced renal nurses, in centers with reverse-osmosis water treatment and comfortable reclining chairs.
Your session
Step by step
Arrival and check-in
Staff take your vital signs — blood pressure, weight, temperature — and review how you have been since your last session.
Access preparation
The nurse connects you to the dialysis machine through your vascular access: an AV fistula, AV graft, or central venous catheter.
Treatment
Blood flows into the dialyzer, where waste and excess fluid are removed, then returns to your body. This takes three to four hours.
Monitoring
Renal nurses watch your vitals and the machine continuously throughout the session.
Completion
The nurse disconnects you, checks your post-treatment vitals and weight, and gives you aftercare instructions.
Who needs in-center hemodialysis?
Your nephrologist may recommend in-center hemodialysis if you:
You have been diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease or Stage 5 CKD
Your GFR is below 15 mL/min
You have symptoms of kidney failure such as severe fatigue, swelling, or difficulty breathing
You need supervised treatment because of other medical conditions
You prefer the support of a clinical setting

- How long does each session take?
- A standard session lasts three to four hours, three times per week. Your nephrologist sets the duration based on your condition and lab results.
- Is hemodialysis painful?
- You may feel a brief pinch when the needle is inserted at your access site. The treatment itself is generally painless.
- Does PhilHealth cover hemodialysis?
- Yes. As a PhilHealth-accredited facility, eligible patients receive coverage. Our staff help with the requirements and filing.
- Can I eat or drink during treatment?
- Light snacks are generally permitted. Fluid intake should follow your prescribed limits — your care team will guide you.
- What documents do I need to bring for my first treatment?
- Bring your latest laboratory results from within the last month, your Hepatitis profile (HbsAg, Anti-HCV, Anti-HBs), and your latest dialysis treatment logs. You will also need a medical clearance or referral from your attending nephrologist, a valid government ID, and your PhilHealth ID or Member Data Record (MDR).
