Understanding Your Dialysis Access

Learn about the different types of dialysis access — fistula, graft, and catheter — and how to care for them.

Last reviewed October 2025

Key Takeaways
  • A fistula (AV fistula) is the preferred long-term access — it is created surgically and needs time to mature
  • Never allow blood draws, IV lines, or blood pressure checks on your access arm
  • Check your access daily for the "thrill" (vibration) — contact your team immediately if it stops
  • Keep the access site clean and dry to prevent infection

About This Video

Your dialysis access is your lifeline — it connects you to the dialysis machine and makes treatment possible. This video explains the three types of vascular access, how to care for them, and warning signs to watch for.

Types of Vascular Access

  • AV Fistula: Surgically connecting an artery and vein, usually in the arm. The gold standard — lasts longest with fewest complications.
  • AV Graft: A synthetic tube connecting an artery and vein. Used when fistula is not possible.
  • Central Venous Catheter: A tube inserted into a large vein in the neck or chest. Used temporarily while fistula matures.

Access Care Reminders

  • Wash your access site with antibacterial soap before each treatment
  • Do not carry heavy objects or sleep on your access arm
  • Report any redness, swelling, warmth, or drainage to your care team immediately
  • Feel for the thrill (buzzing sensation) in your fistula or graft at least twice daily
  • Avoid tight clothing, jewelry, or watches on the access arm
